SELF-PORTRAIT

2023.7

The self-portrait is another way for me to focus on myself. Inspired by artists Salvador Dalí and Frida Kahlo, I use the elements in the painting as multiple metaphors, bringing the contents of my consciousness into reality. I map emotions and feelings from the perspectives of family and society, with the individual as the smallest unit.

Throughout the painting, there is a thread of fear and unease towards the mother body and the female reproductive organ, as well as the repressive feelings brought by the primal family. Although I unify the whole in a "peaceful atmosphere," my intention is not to appeal to the beauty. The painting also hides many "dangerous elements": the oyster metaphors sexuality and reproduction; the flowers symbolize birth from the womb; the suit represents male power and discipline; the spider represents my primal family represented by my mother, as well as the irreconcilable contradiction between myself as part of the LGBTQ community and my family. The use of traumatic elements represents my focus on the body, pointing to my emotions and perceptions: in the depiction, I emphasize my existence while engaging in self-healing.
