Navel

The work was created in October of 2023 at the artist's ceramics residency in my hometown of Yixing. I used the concept of "body as a vessel" as the form of expression for the sculpture, metaphorically representing the individual's existence. Simultaneously, I abstracted the human body and diminished other parts to emphasize the "navel" as a distinctive component. Behind the "navel" lies an implicit connection to reproductive relationships and the maternal body, while also pointing to the origins of my physiological gender. The contradictions I encountered in the process of exploring identity and gender cognition stem from my relationship with my original family, represented by my mother, on the one hand, and the "ambiguity" produced by cognitive conflicts between physiological and social gender on the other. I discuss these relationships from a bodily perspective, allowing myself to step out of my body and become an observer, reexamining the connections between the individual, the maternal body, and gender cognition.
